The 10th LLM Legal Aspects of World and Regional Trade Workshop on “Digitalisation, AI, Sustainability and International Trade Law” was organised by Prof OC Ruppel and the Development and Rule of Law Programme (DROP) at the Wallenberg Conference Centre, Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS) from 7 – 8 April 2025. The photo shows the LLM students during the 2 day student workshop exchanging presentations and engaging in stimulating discussions on inter alia “digitalisation, AI and international trade regulation in the current geopolitical landscape (Trump 2.0, BRICS plus, trade wars, global conflicts etc.); new frontiers for Africa–Europe Cooperation; the regulatory ‘AI divide’ between the Global North and South; the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) new role and trade rules compared to the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA). The workshop focused on AI trade relevant regulation pertaining to the global, regional and domestic levels, yet with a special view on aspects of sustainability in times of climate change.
