Oliver Ruppel

On Monday 3rd February 2014 Prof. Oliver C. Ruppel of Stellenbosch University, South Africa delivered a lecture to on Environmental Law and Climate Change. As the students come closer to their specialization units, SLS encourages interaction with specialists in different areas of the Law to give insight and help the students make informed decisions.

Prof Oliver C. Ruppel specialises in International Economic Law, Environmental Law, SADC Law and Public International Law. He coordinates and teaches the LL M modules “Aspects of Environmental Law” and “Legal Aspects of World and Regional Trade”. He is the Coordinating Lead Author (CLA) for Africa of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Working Group II, which is housed at Stanford University (USA); a Regional Resource Person on Trade and Environment in Sub-Saharan Africa to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) (Switzerland); and a Visiting Professor at various institutions worldwide. He was the founding WTO Chair holder and Director of the Human Rights and Documentation Centre at the Faculty of Law, University of Namibia, where he served until 2010. He is also a founding member of the United Nations Environmental Programme’s (UNEP) Association of Environmental Law Lecturers in African Universities (ASSELLAU), Nairobi (Kenya); and a member of the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law, Ottawa (Canada) and a member of the Editorial Board of the NIELS Journal of Environmental Law at the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, Lagos (Nigeria). At times he functions as an external academic legal advisor to the Windhoek based SADC Tribunal.
